Winter 2019

Each of our Disciple U terms will span 11-12 weeks. Each of the courses we offer this semester will last 5 weeks except Old Testament Survey. The semester will be divided into two mini-mesters: January 6 through February 13 and February 17 through March 20.

Winter Mini 1

January 6 - February 13

Sundays, 10:30am

Following Christ (5 weeks,  Jeremy Simpson)
The goal is this course is to explore that it means to be a follower of Christ. We will explore some misconceptions about “salvation,” how it is achieved, what it is, and ultimately who or what it is for. We will dig deep into the biblical terms “regeneration,” “justification,” “sanctification,” and “glorification.” We will help answer the question: are you saved and what’s next?

Sundays, 4pm

Knowing and Doing God’s Will (5 weeks, Missy Marlow)
The purpose of this course is to explore the plain and clear directions from God’s Word about how to know and do God’s will for your life. In this course, we will seek to obtain a proper Biblical understanding of how we should approach and understand God’s will for our lives, how we should make decisions, how to know what is right and good, and how to set our values and worldviews.

Old Testament Survey (11 weeks,  Jeremy Simpson)
This is the first of our 201 course offerings. This course will be an 11 week endeavor to better understand the OT as a whole, how each book ties into each other, and to understand each book as a stand alone work. We will dig into the concept of Christology or Typology and how the entire OT is ultimately a story about Jesus. We will learn about the authors, the settings, the major themes and passages. We will outline each book to see the intended flow and structure of the text. While we won't learn everything there is know in 11 weeks we will unlock deep and life changing understandings that can change your personal OT Bible reading and study for the rest of your life.

Wednesdays, 6pm

Sharing Your Faith and the Gospel (5 weeks, Stacy Gay)
The goal of this course is give you a Biblical understanding of our call to share our faith and the gospel with others; and to equip you with practical tools to obey that command. This course will be more of a hands-on workshop. We will work through how to understand and write out your personal testimony in a clear, cross-cultural way. We will learn Bible storying as a method of evangelizing. We will learn other simple tools that can be used in 1-5 minutes to share the hope we have in Christ in any situation and season.

The purpose of this course is to train and equip the people of North Valley Church to know and understand the purpose of why we exist as a covenant body of believers. We will break down and explore in detail the Biblical command of our mission statement to “become like Christ for God’s glory and others.” We will discuss and learn how this relates to each member of our church, how it relates to everything we do, and how we go about doing it.

Winter Mini 2

Sundays, 10:30am

Habits of a Healthy Marriage (5 weeks,  Jeremy Simpson)
Every marriage is guided by a set of habits. The question is: Are they healthy habits that result in a God-honoring and joyful marriage, or are they bad habits that lead to a self-centered and strained marriage? In this 5 week course we will dig into a video based series from pastor, marriage counselor, and best-selling author Dr. Paul David Tripp. We will detail the necessary habits required for a healthy marriage while identifying the bad habits that need to be uprooted.
