Jesus came to earth for one reason: the glory of God.

His mission had two parts:

1. To die and rise again so that lost and sinful people would be able to become His disciples for God’s glory.

2. To invest time to make disciples who will make disciples for God’s glory.

This is our story. This is a story that began after the fall of humans in Genesis and continues today.

Jesus said the best way for God to receive glory was for this story to continue until He says time is over and Jesus comes back to get us. He also said the best way for His disciples to disciple others is through the context of relationships He called being “the Body of Christ” or the church. The purpose of the church is to see individuals become like Christ for God’s glory and then to help lead and influence others to do the same.

In our church, we believe discipleship requires a right understanding and study of God’s Word and a practice of spiritual disciplines. We believe that a growing disciple must seek to know, understand, practice, and reteach God’s Word. We believe discipleship is experiential (meaning if you aren’t living it out and practicing it, then you aren’t fully experiencing all it has to offer). Said another way: you just aren’t really getting if you aren’t living it.

Lastly, in our philosophy of discipleship, we believe it has to be intentional. We believe Christ-centered discipleship is never accidental. We don’t take for granted and assume just because someone shows up to our weekly worship or has their names on our roles that they are growing disciples. We want to be intentional.

We have created Disciple U for that purpose. Our goal is to intentionally walk through essential principles and truths for discipleship with anyone who is willing to join us in this story.

Are you ready? Have you ever wondered if you could and should be learning more and deeper things about your faith? Do you have questions about how you are supposed to understand it all and think through it well? Is it ever hard to understand exactly how your faith is supposed to intersect with your everyday life?

Come, join us at North Valley Church and let’s try to figure it out together!

Basics

Disciple U is a discipleship strategy at North Valley Church that creates an ongoing culture and system of disciples who make disciples. The format is designed after a university-style model. Each level has prerequisites to be taken before moving onto the next level. The long-term goal is a model of reproducing leadership to allow exponential growth. This program is designed to span a lifetime of growing as a disciple but it should take at least 3-4 years to complete the most basic requirements. Below outlines a simple description of each level of Disciple U and the current structure of courses that will be offered both now and in the future under each level.

101This level is designed with the basic discipleship of every church member in mind. The goal is for each member to eventually go through each of these studies. However, it would require completion of at least 4 of these studies to receive 101-certification. For any church member who completed each of these studies there would be a special 102-certification and recognition.

  • Ÿ NVC Mission Ÿ Meeting With God
  • Ÿ Sharing Your Faith Ÿ Following Christ
  • Ÿ Parenting Ÿ Knowing and Doing God’s Will
  • Ÿ Marriage Ÿ Fear of Man

201 This level is for those church members who want to dig deeper and to truly become students of the Word of God. The expectation for this level is that people do one of the columns of 2 classes below for 201-certification. There would be a special 202-certification and recognition for anyone who took all six.

  • Ÿ How To Study the Bible
  • OT Survey
  • Apologetics
  • Ÿ Theology
  • NT Survey
  • Biblical Manhood and Womanhood

301This level is for those church members who want to go deeper into intentional whole-life discipleship. The expectation to receive 301-certification would be to do at least one of these studies and to begin leading 101 studies. 301 certification then would likely take two semesters. For anyone who completed both studies, there would be a special 302-certification and recognition.

  • ŸReal Life Discipleship
  • Experiencing God
  • ŸLead a 101 Course

401 This level is for your handful of Master Teachers and Disciple-makers in the church who want to be primary disciple-makers going forward.

  • Ÿ Pastoral Mentorship Program
  • Lead a 301 Course

Summer 2018

Each of our Disciple U terms will span 12 weeks. Each of the classes we offer this first semester will last 4 to 6 weeks. So, we will divide our semester into two mini-mesters of 6 weeks each. The entire summer term will be June 3 through August 9. The two mini-mesters will be June 3 through July 8 and July 15 through August 9.

Below are the courses we will offer for the Summer 2018 and a short description of each:

In this course we will discuss things like meeting with God in His Word and through prayer. We will talk about hindrances and challenges to meeting with God like being too dependent on our emotions, legalism, pride, and laziness. We will learn bible storying as a method of evangelizing the way Jesus did it. We will also learn other fun tools that can all be shared in 1-5min to put us on the ready to share the hope we have in Christ in an situation and any season of our life.

Summer Mini 2

July 15-August 9

Sundays, 10:30am

Knowing and Doing God’s Will (5 Weeks)

The purpose of this course is to explore the plain and clear directions from God’s Word about how to know and do God’s will for your life. In this course, we will seek to obtain a proper Biblical understand of how we should approach and understand God’s will for our lives, how we should make decisions, how to know what is right and good, and how to set our values and worldviews.

Sundays 4pm

Fear of Man (6 Weeks)

The purpose of this course is to begin exploring what the fear of man looks like in our lives and in our culture, what we have been called to (fearing God and loving others), how we have lost this focus, and how we can begin to reestablish the fear of God in our lives and regain a right perspective about ourselves and others. During this course, we will explore the various ways we most often tend to be controlled by the fear of man, for only as we begin to categorize our struggles in this area, are we able to see the paths that biblical repentance must travel. We will see explicitly that overcoming the fear of others is not something we can accomplish on our own. There is One who didn’t give into the fear of man and gave Himself up so that we could fear God rightly and thereby begin seeing enslavement to the fear of man eliminated.
